How to Actually Memorise IGCSE Content: Spaced Repetition, Explained

Why re-reading feels like it works (and doesn't)

When you read a paragraph for the fourth time it goes down smoothly. No friction. Your brain reads that smoothness as a signal: I know this. That's the fluency illusion — the most expensive mistake in revision, because what you're measuring (how easily you recognise text) is not what the exam measures.

An exam gives you a blank line and a command word. Nothing to recognise. You have to generate the answer from a memory you built while staring at a page that had all the answers on it. You practised the wrong skill for three hours. Highlighting is worse still: it feels like a decision ("this bit matters") while quietly deferring the work.

The test: close the book and write everything you know about the topic on a blank page. If what comes out is thinner than you expected, that gap is the fluency illusion.

The forgetting curve — and what flattens it

Memory decays fast and then slowly. Learn something today and you'll lose a big chunk within a day or two; what survives that first drop lasts much longer. Left alone it all drifts towards nothing — the grey line below. Now watch a review: recall jumps back to full, and the next decay is shallower. The memory isn't just topped up, it's made more durable — so after four or five well-timed touches the curve is nearly flat.

Every successful retrieval resets recall and flattens the next decay — which is why the gaps can keep growing.

Two things fall out of that. Timing beats volume — one review on day 1 does more than an hour of re-reading. And the intervals should grow: reviewing what you know solidly is wasted time, reviewing what you've completely lost is re-learning from scratch. Catch it at the wobble.

The two mechanisms that actually work

1. Active recall (retrieval practice)

Instead of putting information in, pull it out. Cover the page and say the definition. Answer before you look. Write the equation from memory. Retrieving is what strengthens the memory — the effort is the mechanism, not a test of it.

Which is why struggling is a good sign: a retrieval that costs eight seconds of grinding builds far more than one that arrives instantly. If revision feels comfortable, it probably isn't working. (Our full guide to revising for IGCSE covers the wider technique menu.)

2. Spaced repetition

Retrieval works best spaced out. Twenty minutes today, ten tomorrow, ten next week beats forty minutes in one sitting — same total time, far better retention, because each session starts from a faded memory and forces real work.

The problem is bookkeeping: across five subjects and eighty topics, that means tracking which of a few thousand facts is due today. Nobody manages it by hand. That's what the algorithm is for.

Why "Again" re-shows in ten minutes, not tomorrow. A card you've just failed isn't in memory at all, so leaving it until tomorrow means starting from zero. Ten minutes is long enough that you can't parrot the answer back, short enough that you finish the session having got it right once.

Why the ladder is 1 day → 6 days → × ease factor. The first drop is the steep one, so the first review comes fast; survive it and the memory holds for most of a week. After that the card's own ease factor takes over — a definition you find trivial can vanish for two months while a fiddly one returns every fortnight.

Why the ease factor is floored at 1.3. Every "Hard" pulls a card's ease down; without a floor, a difficult card would spiral — ease sliding below 1.0, intervals shrinking until it turned up in every session forever, crowding out everything else. At 1.3 the worst case is a card that returns every week or two and still makes progress. Difficult cards get more attention; they don't get to eat your revision.

All of it is per-card and per-student: two people on the same topic have completely different queues by week three.

1.3Ease floor — no card can spiral

You won't see 117,075 cards. The number matters because whatever narrow slice you need already exists — and the filters cut it down before you start.

  • Topic and unit — study exactly the chapter you did in class this week, or one unit before a mock.
  • Core or Extended — Core candidates are never shown Extended-only content, and Extended students don't waste sessions below their tier.
  • Difficulty — start on the foundations of a new topic, or go straight to the hard end when consolidating.
  • Seen / unseen — the most underrated filter. "Unseen only" meets new material without your queue in the way; "seen only" makes the session pure revision.

Three more things a card can do:

  • Favourite it into a deck. The cards you keep getting wrong are your revision list. Star them and you've built, effortlessly, the "things I don't know" deck you'd otherwise hand-write badly at 11pm.
  • Add a private note. The best notes aren't definitions, they're the reason you got it wrong — "confusing this with diffusion; this one needs energy." The note reappears with the card, so the correction gets spaced-repeated too.
  • Report a card. A wrong card is worse than no card, because the algorithm will faithfully drill the error into you. Flag it.

Flashcards are step one, not the whole thing

The honest limitation: flashcards are superb for anything with a stateable right answer — definitions, units, formulae, apparatus, reagents and their observations, command word meanings, key terms. They will not teach you to write a six-mark explanation or work through a multi-step calculation. Knowing the facts is necessary, not sufficient.

  • Mastered — 80% or better. Leave it; let the flashcard schedule keep it warm.
  • Learning — 50–79%. The productive middle, where most of your practice belongs.
  • Struggling — under 50%. Go back to notes and flashcards first; hammering questions on a topic you don't understand teaches you to be wrong faster.

A "practise your weakest topics" route builds a set straight from those buckets, killing the commonest revision failure: spending your best hours on topics you already enjoy. How to actually run it

  1. Learn the topic once, properly
    Read the notes in the revision library, use an interactive tool if it only makes sense in motion, lean on an AI tutor where you're stuck. You can't retrieve what was never encoded.
  2. Same day: run that topic's flashcards
    Filter to the topic and go through it once. Rate honestly — everyone rushes this, and pressing "Good" on something you half-guessed corrupts the schedule.
  3. Every day after: clear what's due, nothing more
    Ten to fifteen minutes. The queue tells you what's ripe; piling on extra cards is how people burn out.
  4. Once the cards stick, switch to questions
    Read every explanation, even on the ones you got right — half the marks live in the wording, not the knowledge.
  5. Weekly: check mastery and re-aim
    Point next week at the Struggling and Learning buckets. Make it a fixed slot in your revision timetable, not a decision you take when tired.
  6. Final phase: full papers under timing
    Spaced repetition keeps content alive while you shift to whole-paper work — see how many past papers you actually need.

Start early enough for the intervals to breathe. Begun eight weeks out, spaced repetition is transformative; begun four days out it's just flashcards, because the algorithm has no room to space anything. If you really are days away, see what to do the night before.

Four mistakes that quietly break the system

  • Rating dishonestly. "Good" on a card you fumbled is self-sabotage. The schedule is only as good as your ratings.
  • Binge-then-vanish. Four hundred cards on Sunday, nothing until the next. The algorithm is built around small daily contact.
  • Making cards instead of using them. Hand-writing a beautiful deck is note-making in disguise — the passive activity you were escaping.
  • Flashcards as the only method. They secure recall. Marks also need structure, command words and timing, which only past-paper practice teaches.

FAQ

How many flashcards a day should I do for IGCSE?
Consistency beats volume: 15–30 minutes a day across your subjects beats a two-hour session once a week. That's often 40–80 cards, but the honest answer is "however many are due" — a proper queue sizes itself and shrinks as cards mature. On a new topic, add 15–20 cards and let them settle first.
Are flashcards better than making notes?
For memorising content, yes — clearly. Notes are an input activity; flashcards force retrieval, and retrieval builds durable memory. They do different jobs, though: notes earn their keep once, when you're first making sense of a topic. After that, re-reading adds very little and the same time spent testing yourself adds a lot.
Does spaced repetition work for maths?
Partly, and it's worth being straight about it. Maths is mostly procedural — you learn it by working problems, and no flashcard teaches you to solve a simultaneous-equations question. What flashcards suit are the recall-able bits: formulae you must know from memory, circle theorems, transformation descriptions, trig exact values, command-word conventions. Use spaced repetition for those and spend the bulk of your maths time on questions with worked solutions.
How far before the exam should I start spaced repetition?
Eight to twelve weeks is the sweet spot for a full IGCSE series. That gives the intervals room to stretch — cards reach the 15-day and 38-day steps, where the real durability is built — while leaving the last few weeks for whole papers under timing. Starting later still helps, but the shorter the runway, the less genuinely spaced it is.
