IGCSE English 0500 or 0510? The Choice That Follows You to University
A student sits her IGCSE English speaking test, performs well, and assumes it counted. It didn't. On 0500 and on 0510, the speaking mark does not contribute to the English grade at all — it is recorded separately on the certificate as a number from 1 to 5.
That is one of several things about IGCSE English that families discover late, and the biggest one is the choice itself: First Language English (0500) or English as a Second Language (0510). They are different qualifications with different papers, different weightings, and — the part that actually matters years later — different standing when a university asks you to prove your English.
- 0500 First Language: two counted components. Paper 1 Reading (2h, 80 marks, 50%, three texts) plus either Paper 2 Directed Writing and Composition (2h, 80 marks, 50%) or Component 3 Coursework Portfolio (80 marks, 50%).
- 0510 ESL: three components. Paper 1 Reading and Writing (2h, 60 marks, 70%), Paper 2 Listening (~50 min, 40 marks, 30%), Paper 3 Speaking (10–15 min, separately endorsed).
- Speaking does not count towards the grade on either. On 0500 it is optional (Component 4); on 0510 it is compulsory but separately endorsed. Both report grades 1 (high) to 5 (low).
- 0511 is the exception: the count-in-speaking version of ESL, where speaking is worth 25% (Reading/Writing 50%, Listening 25%).
- 0500 has no listening paper at all. 0510 devotes 30% to it.
- Both award grades A* to G.
- For university English requirements, 0500 at a high grade is the stronger currency — but many universities accept both, at stated grades. Check the specific institution.
The two qualifications, side by side
The differences that actually change your revision
0500 has no listening paper. 0510 has 30% of one.
This is the structural difference students feel first. On 0510, Paper 2 is roughly 50 minutes of listening across five exercises of short and longer texts, in multiple-choice style, and it is worth 30% of the whole grade. It is also the component students most often neglect, because it is hard to revise from a textbook and easy to assume you will be fine.
On 0500, there is no listening component in the graded papers at all. Every mark comes from reading and writing.
0500 splits reading and writing into two full papers
0510 packs reading and writing into a single 2-hour paper of six exercises — four reading, two writing. 0500 gives each a paper of its own: Paper 1 Reading, two hours and 80 marks, based on three reading texts and answered with structured and extended writing questions; and Paper 2 Directed Writing and Composition, two hours and 80 marks, with an extended writing question and a composition task.
That extra room is the point. 0500 is asking for analysis of writers' craft and for sustained, controlled composition — the things a strong reader and writer can do. 0510 is asking whether you can read for meaning and write clearly and appropriately for a purpose.
0500 offers a coursework route; 0510 does not
On 0500, the second 50% can be Component 3, a Coursework Portfolio of three extended writing assignments, internally assessed and externally moderated, instead of the Paper 2 exam. If your school offers it, that is half the qualification completed without exam-hall time pressure — worth knowing about early, because the work is spread across the course rather than crammed.
Which should you take?
The honest framing: 0500 is written for students operating at or near first-language level, and 0510 is written for students learning English as an additional language. Entering a student for 0500 who is not ready for it produces a lower grade in a "better" qualification — which serves nobody.

One more consideration that rarely gets raised at 14: 0500 is the natural feeder into A Level English, and the analytical reading it trains transfers into any essay subject. If the destination involves humanities, that matters — and English pairs naturally with History 0470, which rewards exactly the same analytical reading. It is also worth knowing where English sits in the hardest-subjects ranking, because 0500 is consistently underestimated.
The university question
Here is where the choice reaches furthest into the future. Many universities accept an IGCSE English qualification in place of a separate English language test such as IELTS — which can save an applicant a test fee, a booking and a great deal of stress.
0500 at a high grade is the strongest version of that argument. Many institutions also accept 0510, typically at a higher grade threshold, and some accept it only for certain courses or at certain levels. Requirements vary widely and are revised regularly.
