IGCSE and O Level in Myanmar: Choosing an Exam Is Choosing a Destination
Ask whether IGCSE is available in Myanmar and the answer, as of August 2026, is yes: international schools in Yangon teach it, and the British Council runs exam sessions for school and private candidates in Yangon and Mandalay. But availability was never the real question. The real question is what each examination in Myanmar is for now — because since 2021 the answer has changed more here than almost anywhere in the world.
Myanmar’s state university system admits on one input: the matriculation examination. And that examination’s candidature has collapsed. More than 910,000 candidates sat it in 2019; in the 2026 sitting, reported by state media at the end of June 2026, 255,228 sat and 133,673 passed — a pass rate of 52.37%, on a candidature roughly a quarter of its pre-coup size. In parallel, the National Unity Government runs its own examinations that the state system does not recognise, and families with the means have moved to internationally portable qualifications — IGCSE among them — precisely because they are marked and certified outside the country.
That is the structural fact this guide is built around: in Myanmar, choosing an exam is choosing a destination. The matriculation feeds the state universities and nothing abroad; the IGCSE and A Level route feeds universities abroad and private pathways, and — as far as we could verify — has no published route into the state allocation at all. Everything practical below (who runs what, how private candidates register, the calendar) follows from that, and everything is date-stamped and hedged where it needs to be, because in Myanmar the operational details genuinely can change between series.
- IGCSE does not feed Myanmar’s state universities. State admission runs on the matriculation exam; we found no published route for IGCSE holders into that allocation. Choosing the British route is choosing universities abroad or private pathways.
- The matriculation itself has shrunk to roughly a quarter of its pre-coup candidature (255,228 sat in 2026 versus more than 910,000 in 2019), with a 52.37% pass rate reported for 2026.
- As of August 2026, the British Council runs Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel school exams in Yangon and Mandalay, for school and private candidates, with registration online and fees paid in USD by international card.
- Registration for the October/November series is typically announced around June/July — and the British Council’s windows close earlier than the exam boards’ own deadlines.
- Cambridge June 2026 results: AS & A Level 11 August, IGCSE & O Level 18 August, released to centres at 11:30 Myanmar time.
- Cambridge’s standard entry deadline for November 2026 passed on 16 August; the late window runs to 21 September with a late fee.
- Verify everything with British Council Yangon directly. Their country site is often unreachable from outside Myanmar, and operations can change — this guide is a map, not a registration document.
The matriculation picture, in numbers
The matriculation examination has for decades been the single gate into Myanmar’s state universities: the score determines not just whether you enter but which institution and which major. Since 2021 the numbers around that gate have moved dramatically, and they are worth seeing side by side. All figures below come from state-media announcements and international reporting of them — note who is counting.
| Sitting | Candidates sat | Passed | Pass rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 (pre-coup) | 910,000+ | — | — |
| 2023 | ~160,000 | — | — |
| 2025 | 207,898 | 99,924 | 48.06% |
| 2026 (results 28 June 2026) | 255,228 | 133,673 | 52.37% |
University enrolment tells the same story from the other end: international education reporting in 2023 put attendance at state universities down roughly 70% from pre-coup levels. Meanwhile the National Unity Government — the parallel administration formed after the coup — runs its own examinations, taken subject by subject through the year; reporting from mid-2023 put registrations at just under 60,000. Those certificates are not recognised by the state system, and their recognition abroad is being worked out case by case. None of this is neutral information in Myanmar, and we are not scoring it — but a family planning a teenager’s next four years has to see the shape of it plainly.
What the British route is actually for here
Given that map, the honest description of IGCSE in Myanmar is this: it is the portable option. The certificate is issued by Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel, marked outside the country, and recognised by universities across Southeast Asia and beyond — which countries accept IGCSE sorts the recognition landscape properly. For Myanmar students the well-trodden destinations are regional: foundation and degree programmes in Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore that admit on IGCSE and A Level results, with Malaysia in particular hosting a large ecosystem of pathway programmes. The reverse is equally true and needs saying plainly: an IGCSE certificate is not a matriculation result, and a student who takes this route should plan as if the state university door is closed — if your family’s plan depends on a state university place, confirm the position with the institution before choosing away from the matriculation.
Who teaches it? A cluster of international schools in Yangon runs Cambridge programmes through IGCSE and on to AS and A Level — and reporting since 2021 notes that several international schools scaled back or closed while others continued, so check any school’s current accreditation status directly rather than trusting a directory. For students outside those schools — self-studying, in monastic or community education, or continuing after an interrupted school career — the private-candidate route through the British Council exists for exactly this situation, and sitting IGCSE without a school explains how that works in general.
One comparison worth naming, because Myanmar students weigh it constantly: the American GED has also become a common escape route, reported widely as a lifeline for students who left the state system after 2021. The two are not interchangeable. The GED is a single high-school-equivalency test, fast and comparatively cheap; IGCSE followed by A Levels is a longer, subject-by-subject academic record. For competitive degree courses — and for anything requiring demonstrated depth in mathematics or the sciences — a strong IGCSE-and-A-Level file generally travels better, while the GED’s speed suits students who mainly need a completed-secondary credential to unlock a foundation year. Check what your specific target universities accept before choosing; many accept both, weighted differently.
Registering through the British Council
As of August 2026, the picture that emerges from the British Council Myanmar’s published information is a functioning, twice-yearly operation:
| What | Detail (as of August 2026 — verify) |
|---|---|
| Boards offered | Cambridge International (IGCSE, AS & A Level) and Pearson Edexcel (International GCSE, IAL) |
| Locations | Exams held in Yangon and Mandalay |
| Who can enter | Both individual (private) candidates and British Council partner-school candidates |
| How you register | Online; each candidate completes registration and payment individually |
| Payment | Online at the point of booking, in USD, by a card that supports international transactions (Visa, Mastercard, JCB) — a requirement stated as applying to all candidates from 26 June 2026 |
| October/November window | Registration typically announced around June/July for the October/November series |
Two practical warnings that hold everywhere the British Council operates, and doubly here. First, the British Council’s registration windows close earlier than the exam boards’ own deadlines — sometimes by weeks — so the dates Cambridge publishes are the ceiling, not your deadline. Second, the USD-by-international-card requirement is a real constraint in Myanmar’s banking environment: sort out how you will pay before the window opens, not during it.
The calendar from here
Cambridge releases results to centres at 06:00 UK time, which is 11:30 in Myanmar — and the release is to your centre, which passes results to you on its own schedule, with private candidates typically served after school cohorts. How to check IGCSE results online covers the portals and the credentials your centre must issue you in advance — worth arranging early when your centre is a British Council office rather than a school you see daily.
Preparing when the system around you is unstable
Most revision advice assumes a stable school underneath the student. For many Myanmar candidates that assumption fails — interrupted schooling, self-study, electricity and connectivity that cannot be taken for granted. What survives those conditions is the same thing that works everywhere, just more so: real past papers, marked honestly, topic by topic.
- Choose few subjects and finish themA private candidate paying per subject in USD should sit the five or six subjects universities actually ask for, not ten. Choosing IGCSE subjects works through which ones carry weight.
- Let past papers be the syllabusWhere teaching is patchy, the question bank is the most reliable map of what examiners want — how to use past papers properly is the method.
- Mark against the mark scheme, not against feelingSelf-studying candidates systematically overestimate written answers. Marking against the official scheme — or having it done for you — is the correction.
- Anchor the core subjectsMathematics and English gate more university offers than any other pair. Start from Mathematics 0580 and build outwards — the sciences, like Physics 0625, follow the same topic-first method.

The honest close: in most countries this guide would end by weighing two good options. In Myanmar, as of August 2026, it ends with a sentence families already know — the exam you choose is the future you are provisioning for, and the routes do not reconvene later. What a student controls in the meantime is narrower and more important than anywhere else: the quality of their preparation for whichever papers they will actually sit. Students in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka sit the same papers under far more settled arrangements; the papers themselves, at least, do not care where you sit them.
