1. Characteristics of Successful Entrepreneurs
What is an Entrepreneur?
Entrepreneur: A person who is willing and able to create a new business idea or invention and takes risks in pursuing success. Successful entrepreneurs identify opportunities, create value for customers, and build thriving businesses.
What Do Entrepreneurs Do? (The Three Core Roles)
1. Organise Resources
Entrepreneurs must gather and coordinate all the resources needed to start and run a business: space, equipment, technology, employees, and finance.
Michael Dell started his computer company in his garage. He had to organise physical space, computers, software, employees, and manage cash flow from day one.
2. Make Business Decisions
Every major decision—what to sell, where to locate, what price to charge, how to market—determines success or failure. These decisions require market research, creativity, and business judgment.
Restaurant owner: Decides the cuisine type, location, price point, and promotional strategy. Wrong choices waste resources and lose opportunities.
3. Take Risks
Entrepreneurship always involves risk—financial (investing savings), personal (reputation), and professional (leaving a secure job). These risks can lead to great rewards or financial loss.
Ben Francis (Gymshark founder) started by buying a sewing machine and making gym clothes in his parents' garage. This grew into a multi-million-pound company with hundreds of employees.
