The Big Idea: Cambridge exams reward four specific skills. To get full marks, you must combine at least two of them in longer answers — usually Knowledge + Application to start, then Analysis + Evaluation for the really valuable marks. Just answering the question isn't enough; you need to prove you understand why your answer matters.

Chapter Overview

Knowledge

Showing you recognise and understand key business terms, concepts, formulas, theories, methods and models.

Application

Using data and information from the case study or stimulus material to back up your points, plus applying formulas in the right context.

Analysis

Working with business data in written, numerical or graphical form, and developing logical chains of reasoning (cause → effect → outcomes).

Evaluation

Making justified decisions, reaching conclusions, or making recommendations based on the evidence you've already given.

Skill 1: Knowledge

What is Knowledge? Knowledge marks reward you for showing you understand the meaning of key business terms, concepts, formulas, theories, methods and models. This is your foundation.

How to Gain Knowledge Marks

You demonstrate knowledge in three main ways:

  • Give clear, accurate definitions of business terms (e.g. "primary sector", "profit")
  • Explain what a theory or model means (e.g. explaining Porter's Five Forces)
  • State relevant points about the topic — features, benefits, drawbacks, or implications

Understanding vs Remembering

Knowledge isn't just regurgitating facts. It's showing you actually grasp what something means. For example:

❌ Not enough:

The primary sector is farming and mining.

✓ Better:

The primary sector extracts raw materials from the ground, sea or air — like mining, agriculture and fishing.

Knowledge Example from the Exam

Define 'primary sector'. [2 marks]

Student answer (full marks):

"The primary sector refers to businesses concerned with the extraction of raw materials from the ground, sea or air."

Why it works: The answer includes both essential parts of the definition: (1) it's about extraction, and (2) it covers all three sources of raw materials. The examiner can tick "demonstrates understanding".

When You'll See Knowledge Questions

Knowledge questions often start with:

  • Define… (give a clear definition)
  • State… (give a feature or point)
  • What is… (explain a concept)
  • Name… (identify something correctly)

Practice Question

Define 'profit'. [2]

Skill 2: Application

What is Application? Application is about linking your knowledge to real data or information from the case study. Examiners reward you for making your answer specific to the business scenario they've given you.

The Two Types of Application

Application appears in two main forms in Business exams:

1. Using Stimulus Data

Taking numbers, facts, or details from the case study and quoting them to support your point.
