1.6 The urbanisation pathway (5 stages)
Countries follow a broadly predictable pathway as they develop economically. The rate of urbanisation isn't constant — it accelerates, then slows, then can even reverse:

1.8 Urban regeneration vs. urban re-imaging
These two terms get confused constantly in exams — here's how to keep them straight permanently:

1.9 Megacities — reasons for growth
Four main factors explain why megacities keep growing, and it's worth understanding each mechanism rather than just memorising the list:
Economic development
Encourages population growth and desirability of goods/services. Megacities act as service centres — but in LEDCs, they're also manufacturing hubs with huge informal economies (e.g. Mumbai, Dhaka).
Population growth
Young people are drawn by vibrancy and opportunity. "Internal growth" also happens — migrants who arrived earlier now have children, sustaining growth from within (Mexico City, Mumbai).
Economies of scale
Cheaper to provide goods/services in one concentrated place. Saves local governments money on infrastructure; centralised communication and transport save time and money.
Multiplier effect
A prospering city attracts investment → more development → more jobs → more skilled workers needed → cycle repeats and multiplies (e.g. San Francisco's digital growth).
1.10 World cities
Not all megacities are "world cities," and not all world cities are megacities — size and influence are two different things.
2. Impacts of Urban Growth
Rapid, unplanned urbanisation creates a predictable set of problems — and the speed of development is greatest in LEDCs. São Paulo, Brazil, is a striking example: it grew from 7 million to over 20 million people in just 40 years, making it the second-largest urban area in the Americas.
2.1 Transport problems
- Road and public transport provision tends to be poor in quality, size, and reliability.
- Rapid development means transport systems become easily overloaded and overcrowded.
- Congestion varies by day of week, time of day, weather, and season.
- High vehicle numbers create atmospheric pollution such as smog.
- Because housing is scarce and transport is unreliable, people are pushed to live as close to their employment as possible — often in informal settlements near job centres, adding to overcrowding.
2.2 Housing problems — informal settlements
Housing availability and affordability simply cannot keep pace with LEDC urban population growth. The result: people build their own homes on any vacant land using scrap materials (cardboard, corrugated iron, plastic) — unplanned, unregulated housing with little sanitation, freshwater, or reliable energy.

2.3 The informal economy
Job creation in megacities cannot match population growth, leading to unemployment and underemployment. People end up doing informal work: shining shoes, giving haircuts, taxi-driving, selling water or food on street corners. These jobs are unskilled, labour-intensive, and cheap to start — but:
2.4 Deprivation, inequality, and the cycle of poverty
Many low-income families are "pulled" toward informal settlements looking for a sense of belonging with others in a similar situation. Without a strong social network, high crime, begging, and petty theft become more common — degrading both the physical and social environment.
Why it's so hard to break: children get less parental support, attend inadequate schools, leave school early with few qualifications, can't find well-paid work, rely on social handouts — and their own children are born straight back into the same cycle.
2.5 Impacts of urban growth on rural areas
Urban growth doesn't just change cities — it transforms the countryside around them too, through the rise of the suburbanised village.
- Originally quiet, independent places with basic services near large urban areas.

3.2 Managing informal settlements — 5 strategies
This is the heart of the whole "solutions" topic — you need to know all five approaches, be able to name a real example for each, and be ready to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses.
1. Bulldoze and Clear Away
Operation Murambatsvina — Zimbabwe
"Move the Rubbish," also known as Operation Restore Order — a massive government campaign to forcibly clear slum areas nationwide. It directly affected at least 700,000 people (loss of homes and livelihoods) and indirectly affected around 2.4 million. Officially framed as a crackdown on illegal housing and disease risk — but critics saw it as targeting political opponents of Robert Mugabe's government.
2. Clear Away but Relocate People
KENSUP — Kenya Slum Upgrading Programme
Established in 2003 by the Kenyan government and UN Habitat, targeting the 5.3 million people living in Kenya's squatter settlements. The flagship in Kibera built contemporary high-rise apartments, nicknamed "The Promised Land" by locals — heavily subsidised, with basic services (water, sanitation, electricity) that slums lack.
3. Redevelop
A more extreme strategy: completely remove squatter areas and rebuild in a structured, formal manner. Used historically in the UK for inner-city slum sites — and is currently the suggested/adopted strategy for Dharavi, Mumbai, India, where the city's goal is to raise living standards by demolishing informal settlements and replacing them with high-rise tower blocks.
4. Self-Help / Site-and-Service Schemes
The Favela Bairro Project — Rio de Janeiro
Also called the "Slum to Neighbourhood" project. Residents of favelas can rent brick homes from the local government, equipped with running water, electricity, and sanitation — some available for purchase. Rubbish collection, schools, and health centres are added too. In Rocinha, this transformed the neighbourhood: most homes now have basic utilities, plus cafes and shops, and some residents were granted legal land ownership.
5. Ignore
Some local governments either ignore informal settlements hoping they disappear, or simply lack funds to redevelop. Interestingly, this isn't always a total failure: many residents gradually improve their own homes' stability, durability, and quality by buying better materials and doing the work themselves — as seen in parts of Rocinha, Rio. In some areas, communities become so self-sufficient and stable that authorities are no longer needed to provide help at all.
3.3 Government investment example
The Brazilian Federal Savings Bank offered locals 100% mortgages to purchase homes. This shifts upkeep and improvement responsibility from the government to the homeowner, freeing up public money for infrastructure (paved roads, sewers, streetlights). However, many favelas have limited or no access to public transport, making it hard for residents to reach work — so many fall behind on mortgage payments. This is a great example of a solution that looks good on paper but has a real practical flaw worth mentioning in evaluation-style answers.
4. Case Study: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Why Rio? The essentials.
Brazil is a major agricultural and industrial power with the strongest economy in Latin America (capital: Brasília). Rio de Janeiro served as Brazil's capital in 1950 with a population of 3 million — today it's Brazil's second-largest city (after São Paulo) with over 12.5 million people. It's a major trading port (oil refining, shipbuilding; exports iron, steel, crude petroleum) and hosted the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.
Migration into Rio
- Rapid rural-to-urban migration in search of jobs.
- Despite a large agricultural base, there's no land ownership and few opportunities for progress in rural areas.
- Farming is challenging and unprofitable, with poor pay and significant wealth gaps; rural areas are vulnerable to natural disasters and lack social facilities.
- The city offers better job opportunities, higher wages, better schooling and healthcare, and the potential for a greater quality of life.
Housing — the Favelas
- Inward migration puts pressure on services and amenities → housing shortage.
- Rocinha is the biggest and most developed favela — where most rural migrants start their lives.
- Around 1,000 favelas in and around Rio house more than 20% of the population, mostly on unsuitable land on the city's edge.
- Many favelas are well-established, even though residents have no legal rights to the land: 75% of favela homes have tiled floors, and 95% are built of solid materials like masonry — some even have computers, TVs, running water, electricity, and internet.
- Newer, less-established settlements clinging to the mountainside are overcrowded and built from corrugated iron and timber.
Transport
Urban infrastructure planning has not kept pace with Rio's rapid expansion. Roads are seriously congested, rail service is limited, and private buses provide much of the public transport. As population and wealth grow, more cars appear on the roads. The underground train system is effective but has limited stops.
Education
- Children start school at age 4; due to limited classroom space, school days often only last three to four hours.
