Types of Digital Devices
Every digital device — from a huge mainframe to the smartphone in your pocket —
exists on a spectrum of power vs. portability, and understanding
what each device trades off tells you exactly why it's used where it is.

1. What Is a Computer?
Strip away the screen, the keyboard, the fancy apps — at its absolute core, a computer
is just a machine that does three things in order: it takes something
in, it does something to it, and it gives something back out. That's it. Everything
else (your phone, a supercomputer, a smart fridge) is just a fancier version of that
same three-step loop.
The key distinction the exam loves to test is the difference between data
and information. Think of data as ingredients thrown in a bowl —
raw, unprocessed, meaningless on their own (like the number "37" floating with no context).
Information is the finished dish — data that's been processed so a person can actually
understand it (like "the temperature today is 37°C").
The Process
INPUT → PROCESS → OUTPUT
Input = raw, unprocessed data. Output = information people can understand.
Analogy
Think of a coffee machine: you put in raw coffee beans and water (data/input), the
machine grinds and brews (process), and out comes a drinkable cup of coffee (information/output).
You couldn't drink the beans — but you can drink the finished product. Same idea with data
becoming information.

Picture a bank processing millions of transactions every single second, or a hospital
storing every patient record in the country — no ordinary desktop could handle that
load without crashing or grinding to a halt. That's exactly the gap a
mainframe computer fills. It's a computer built for
huge processing power and massive data storage,
designed from the ground up to be secure, reliable, and to serve
hundreds or thousands of users simultaneously without breaking a sweat.
- Used for critical tasks — things that absolutely cannot fail.
- Common in finance (banks processing transactions), health (hospital record systems), and government (census data, tax records).
