Respiration

Respiration is the chemical breakdown of glucose to release energy. It can happen with oxygen (aerobic) or without (anaerobic), and the way it happens dramatically changes how much energy you get — and what gets left over.

Respiration is a chemical process that releases energy from glucose molecules. Think of it like burning fuel — except instead of flames, it's controlled chemical reactions inside your cells, and instead of heat and smoke, it's energy your cells can actually use.

  • Happens in ALL living cells — every cell in your body is respiring right now.
  • Enzyme-controlled — the reactions are speeded up and directed by enzymes.
  • Energy is RELEASED, not made or created. The energy was already stored in the glucose bonds — respiration just lets it out.
  • Can be aerobic or anaerobic. Aerobic respiration (with oxygen) releases MUCH more energy than anaerobic (without oxygen).
  • Most aerobic respiration happens in the mitochondria — the cell's "power plant".
