IGCSE Maths 0580 vs 0607: Which One Are You Actually Taking?

Two students in the same year group, both doing "IGCSE Maths". One sits two papers with a scientific calculator. The other sits three, needs a graphic display calculator for two of them, and finishes with a paper that asks her to investigate an open-ended problem and build a model.

They are not on the same course. One is 0580 Mathematics; the other is 0607 International Mathematics. The difference is substantial, it is decided by your school, and a surprising number of students only discover which one they are on when someone mentions the calculator.

  • 0580 candidates take two papers. 0607 candidates take three. That third paper is the real difference.
  • 0607 requires a graphic display calculator for Papers 3, 4, 5 and 6. Calculators are not allowed at all in Papers 1 and 2.

  • 0607 is the route most often paired with IB-bound international schools; 0580 is the broader default.

Which one are you on? Check the paper numbers

The fastest way to know, without asking anyone: look at a past paper your teacher has set, or your statement of entry. The paper numbering gives it away immediately.

Core candidates follow the same shape with different numbers: 0607 Core is Papers 1, 3 and 5, each 1h15, at 40% / 40% / 20%.

So: if you sit Paper 2 and Paper 4 only, you are on 0580 Extended. If there is a Paper 6 on your timetable, you are on 0607 Extended. On the Core route, 0580 is Papers 1 and 3; 0607 is Papers 1, 3 and 5.

The graphic display calculator is not a detail

This is the change students feel most. In 0580, the calculator papers assume a scientific calculator, and it is essentially a faster way of doing arithmetic you could do by hand.

In 0607, Cambridge states that candidates should have a graphic display calculator for Papers 3, 4, 5 and 6, and that calculators are not allowed for Papers 1 and 2. More importantly, the syllabus expects candidates to use it as a mathematical tool — solving equations, sketching and interpreting the properties of functions, and analysing data — not merely to compute.

Buy the calculator early and learn it as a subject. The most common self-inflicted 0607 problem is a student who gets a GDC weeks before the exam and spends the paper fighting the menus. GDC fluency takes months of ordinary use, not a crash course. If you are entered for 0607 and do not yet own the model your school recommends, that is this week's job.

Paper 6: the component with no 0580 equivalent

0607's third paper is where the syllabus earns its name. At Extended, Paper 6 is 1 hour 30 minutes and carries one investigation section and one modelling section, with a graphic display calculator required. At Core, Paper 5 is one investigation, 1h15 and 40 marks.

An investigation question does not tell you the method. It gives you a situation, asks you to explore it, find a pattern, generalise it and communicate what you found. A modelling question gives you a real-world context and asks you to choose a function that fits, use it, and comment on how good the fit is. Both reward something 0580 rarely tests directly: mathematical communication — writing down what you did and why, clearly enough that a reader can follow the reasoning.

It is worth 20% of the grade, and it is routinely the part students find hardest — not because the mathematics is more advanced, but because there is no worked example to imitate. The only preparation that works is doing many of them.

The tiering trap is identical on both syllabuses and it is the most consequential administrative decision in IGCSE Maths: a Core entry caps the grade at C. Cambridge's guidance is that candidates expected to achieve grade D or below take Core, and those expected to achieve C or above take Extended. That decision is usually made by the school, often on the basis of a mock, and it is very hard to reverse late. If your child is borderline and any pathway that needs a B or above is possible, that conversation belongs in the calendar now — the same warning we give about tiering in Egypt's equivalency rules, where Core entries can disqualify a student entirely.

So which is better?

Neither, and any article that tells you otherwise is guessing. They optimise for different things.

In practice the choice is your school's, not yours. What is genuinely yours is what you do about it — and the two courses need different preparation. If you are on 0607 and revising from 0580 past papers because there are more of them, you are training for two of your three papers and ignoring the third.
