IGCSE Additional Mathematics 0606: Who Should Take It, and What Paper 1 Really Costs

Additional Mathematics 0606 is the subject students are told to take because it "helps with A Level Maths". That is true, and it is a wildly incomplete description of what you are signing up for.

Two facts get left out of the conversation, and both are in the syllabus document rather than in anyone's advice.

The first: Paper 1 is non-calculator, and it is worth 50%. Half of this qualification is you, a pen, and algebra you have to do by hand. In Mathematics 0580 a calculator is permitted throughout. In 0606 it is banned for two of your four exam hours.

The second: the grade range is A* to E. Not A* to G. There is no bottom half of the scale to land in. A student who takes 0606 and finds it too hard does not collect a D for effort — below E, there is nothing.

That combination is why 0606 is the most misallocated subject on the IGCSE sheet: brilliant for the right student, expensive for the wrong one. Here is how to tell which you are, what is actually on the paper, and — from our own tagged question bank — where the marks really sit.

The assessment, exactly

All candidates take both. Both are externally assessed. There is no tiering — no Core and Extended split as in 0580 — so every candidate sits the same two papers and competes for the same A*–E range.

A list of formulas is printed on page 2 of each paper, but the syllabus is explicit that not all required formulas are given. The subject content marks which ones you get and which ones you are expected to know. Working out which is which, early, is worth several marks — and it is the kind of thing students only discover in March if nobody tells them in September.

Take the non-calculator paper seriously from day one. The most common 0606 failure pattern is a student who is genuinely good at the mathematics and slow at the arithmetic. Exact-value trigonometry, surd manipulation, logarithm laws, differentiation by hand — these are fine in a homework where a calculator sits on the desk, and they are a different subject in two hours without one. Practise Paper 1 material with the calculator physically out of reach, not merely unused.

Cambridge states plainly that knowledge of IGCSE Mathematics content is assumed. Material from 0580 that is not in the 0606 content — surds and indices are the examples given — will not be tested directly, but may be needed to answer a question on something else. In practice that means 0606 is not a replacement for 0580; it is a second subject sat alongside it, and you need both.

Where the marks actually are

The headline is hard to miss. Applications of Differentiation (690) plus Calculus for Kinematics (517) is 1,207 questions — more than the next two topics on the list put together. Add the rest of the calculus sub-topics and the area dominates.

Now put that next to the syllabus ordering. Calculus is topic 14 of 14. Most schemes of work reach it in the second half of the course, and plenty of students meet integration properly only a few months before the exam. The single most-tested area is the one you have had least time with.

The practical implication. If you are planning your own revision — and especially if you are a private candidate or on a resit — front-load calculus rather than working through the syllabus in numerical order. The differentiation techniques feed kinematics, rates of change and the maximum/minimum work, so the same effort pays in three places. Who should take it

Cambridge's own positioning is that 0606 is intended for high-ability learners who have achieved, or are likely to achieve, a grade A*, A or B in IGCSE Mathematics — and that candidates achieving A* to C in 0606 are well prepared for Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics.

Read those two sentences together and the entry bar is clear enough. Here is the same judgement as a table.

The row that decides most cases is the last one. 0606 is almost always an additional subject, not a replacement — you sit it alongside 0580, not instead of it. That means two maths syllabuses, four maths exam papers, and a real cost to everything else on your sheet. The A*–E range is the real risk, and it is asymmetric. On most IGCSE subjects a student who overreaches lands two or three grades lower and moves on. On 0606 the scale stops at E. A marginal candidate is not risking a C instead of an A — they are risking an ungraded result on a transcript that will be read by universities. If the honest answer to "are they on for an A in 0580?" is "probably not", the answer to 0606 is no.

Is it actually needed for A Level Maths?

No — and this is worth stating clearly, because families are sometimes told otherwise.

Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics does not require 0606. The standard entry route is a strong grade in IGCSE Mathematics. What 0606 does is make the first term of A Level substantially less steep, because you will already have met functions, logarithms, the binomial theorem, radians and basic differentiation.

The overlap is real and large. Compare the fourteen topics above with the Pure Mathematics content in the Edexcel International A Level Maths units and you will see the same names recurring — 0606 is roughly a first pass over P1 material at lower depth. That is a genuine head start, worth perhaps a term of comfort, and it is not the same thing as a prerequisite.

So the honest framing is: 0606 buys you an easier transition and a signal of mathematical strength on your transcript. It does not buy you access. If you are choosing between 0606 and protecting your grades in three other subjects, protect the grades.

Which maths code am I even taking?

Three Cambridge codes get confused constantly, and mixing them up at registration is expensive.

0606 sits alongside either of the other two. It is not an alternative to them, and it is not a harder tier of them — it is a separate qualification with separate content. If you are weighing 0580 against 0607, we compare them in detail in 0580 vs 0607.

Good news: nothing changes until at least 2030

Cambridge published the 0606 syllabus for examination in 2028, 2029 and 2030 in September 2025, and the changes section says it directly: there are no significant changes which affect teaching, and textbooks endorsed for the 2025 syllabus remain suitable.

That is unusually stable. Several syllabuses are being rewritten for 2027 and beyond — Geography 0460 is a substantial rebuild — and we track those in the 2027 syllabus changes. How to prepare for it

  1. Phase 1 · Split your practice by calculator
    Keep two separate stacks from the start. Everything you do for Paper 1 goes in the non-calculator stack, and you do it with the calculator out of the room. Students who blur this discover in April that their algebraic fluency is calculator-dependent.
  2. Phase 2 · Front-load calculus
    It is topic 14 and the heaviest-tested area. Do not wait for the scheme of work. Differentiation first, then applications, then kinematics — the same technique carries all three.
  3. Phase 3 · Learn the formula list, and the gaps in it
    Go through the syllabus content marking which formulas are printed on page 2 and which you must recall. The ones you must recall are a short, memorisable list — and each one is worth marks on both papers.
  4. Phase 4 · Full papers, alternating
    Once content is in place, alternate Paper 1 and Paper 2 under timed conditions. Two hours for 80 marks is 1.5 minutes a mark, which is tighter than it sounds when the arithmetic is manual.

The summary

0606 is an excellent qualification for a student who is already fluent, wants to do mathematics after sixteen, and has the timetable room for a second maths subject. For that student it makes the first year of A Level noticeably easier and says something true about them on a transcript.

For everyone else it is two extra exam papers, one of them without a calculator, on a scale that bottoms out at E. The subject does not meet you halfway. Decide honestly which student you are — and if the answer is the first one, start with calculus.

Is IGCSE Additional Mathematics 0606 harder than 0580?
Substantially, and in a specific way. 0580 Extended is graded A* to E with a Core tier below it graded C to G; 0606 is graded A* to E with no lower tier at all, so there is no safety net if a candidate is out of their depth. The content is a level up too — functions, the factor and remainder theorem, radians, the binomial theorem, and calculus, none of which appear in 0580 — and Cambridge assumes you already know the whole of IGCSE Mathematics before you start. The structural difference students underestimate most is that Paper 1 is non-calculator and worth 50%, whereas a calculator is permitted throughout 0580. Cambridge positions 0606 for learners who have achieved or are likely to achieve A*, A or B in IGCSE Mathematics.
Do I need Additional Maths 0606 to take A Level Maths?
No. Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics does not require 0606, and the normal entry route is a strong grade in IGCSE Mathematics. What 0606 gives you is a smoother transition: you will already have met functions, logarithms and exponentials, radians, the binomial theorem and introductory differentiation, all of which appear again in the first Pure Mathematics unit. Cambridge states that candidates achieving grades A* to C in 0606 are well prepared to follow Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics. Treat it as roughly one term of head start plus a strong signal on your transcript — valuable, but not a prerequisite. If taking it would put your grades in three other subjects at risk, protect the grades.
How is Additional Mathematics 0606 assessed?
All candidates take two externally assessed components, and there is no Core/Extended tiering. Paper 1 runs 2 hours for 80 marks and is worth 50%, with no calculator allowed. Paper 2 runs 2 hours for 80 marks and is also worth 50%, and requires a scientific calculator. Both papers contain structured and unstructured questions.
