Review of marks — you are one grade short and within
about three marks of the boundary. Worth asking. It carries a fee and the grade can go down as
well as up, so it suits the close calls and nothing else. Enter November anyway as insurance:
entries close before the review result comes back.
Retake in November — you are further than a review
can realistically move you. Eight weeks is enough to jump a grade if you start on the papers
rather than the notes.
Both the review-of-marks and November-entry deadlines land around 20–21 September 2026. Because a review result can take weeks to come back, you often have to enter the November retake before you know the review outcome — so the two decisions are made together, not in sequence.
What is a review of marks?
A review of marks (formerly an Enquiry About Results, or EAR) asks the board to re-check the marking of your paper. It is worth doing when you are within a few marks of the next grade boundary. It carries a fee and the grade can go down as well as up, so it is not a free lottery ticket.
How do I find out how many marks I was from the boundary?
Ask your exams officer. They can see your marks against the published grade boundaries. This one number decides the whole thing — a subject three marks below a boundary is a completely different decision from one twenty marks below.
Should I retake if I only need the grade for one university?
Check the offer first. Students lose weeks agonising over a grade that already clears the bar they need. If the grade you have already meets the requirement, keep it — there is no deadline, no fee and no risk.
Can the grade go down after a review?
Yes. A review re-checks the marking, and marks can move in either direction. That is why it is worth doing when you are close to a boundary and not worth doing when you are well below one.
