What is Physical Safety?
Physical safety in IT is about creating a safe environment when using technology. It includes identifying dangers that could lead to serious injury or even loss of life, and putting strategies in place to prevent them.
Think of it like this: just as you'd never work in a chemistry lab without safety goggles, you shouldn't use IT equipment without considering the physical hazards around you.

The Four Main Risk Categories
1. Electrocution
What causes it: Spilling drinks near electrical equipment or touching live, uninsulated cables.
Why it matters: Electrical shock can cause serious injury or death.
- Keep liquids (drinks, water bottles) away from all electrical equipment
- Ensure cables are properly insulated and protected
- Use non-conductive materials (rubber, plastic) where possible
- Turn off and unplug equipment before cleaning or maintenance
- Install circuit breakers or fuses to prevent electrical overload
Real scenario: A student spills juice on a laptop keyboard while gaming. If the liquid reaches the battery or power supply, it could short-circuit and cause an electric shock. Prevention: Use water bottles with sealed lids and keep them at least 1 metre away from your setup.
2. Fire Hazards
What causes them: Overloading plug sockets with too many devices, or equipment overheating due to poor ventilation.
Why it matters: Fire can spread rapidly and destroy equipment, data, and property—and endanger lives.
- Use surge protectors to prevent electrical overload
- Ensure enough plug sockets in the room—never chain multiple extension cables
- Don't plug too many high-power devices into one socket (e.g., kettle + printer + chargers)
- Don't leave devices plugged in and unattended
- Ensure equipment is properly ventilated and air vents are not blocked
- Keep flammable materials (papers, fabric) away from heat sources
- Regularly check equipment for signs of damage (frayed cables, discoloration)
- Turn off or unplug devices when you leave the location
- Know where fire extinguishers are located
Exam tip: Examiners often ask about "overloading" — they want you to understand that plugging 5 devices into one socket creates fire risk. Always mention surge protectors or proper distribution of sockets as prevention.
