Hacking

What is hacking?

Hacking is the act of gaining unauthorized access to a computer system or network without permission. A hacker exploits vulnerabilities (weaknesses) in software, networks, or user behavior to break in and steal data, install malware, or cause damage.

Hackers look for opportunities like:

  • Unpatched software: Software with known security flaws that haven't been fixed yet. Like leaving your door unlocked when a locksmith has announced they found the flaw.
  • Out-of-date anti-malware: Outdated security software can't recognize new threats.
  • Weak passwords: Passwords like "123456" or "password" are cracked in seconds.
Effects of Hacking

A successful hack can cause serious damage:

  • Data breaches: Your personal information (emails, addresses, payment details) is stolen.
  • Installation of malware: The hacker plants viruses or spyware on your system.
  • Data loss: Files are deleted or corrupted.
  • Identity theft: Criminals use your identity to commit fraud.

How to Prevent Hacking
  • Use strong passwords: At least 12 characters with uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and special characters. Think: "MyDog#Blue2024!" rather than "password123".
  • Use two-factor authentication (2FA): Even if someone steals your password, they can't get in without your phone.
  • Install anti-malware software: Detect and remove malicious programs before they do damage.
