📝 Create & Edit a Document

How Do You Start?

When you open a word processor (like Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice), you're usually greeted with options to either create a blank document or choose from pre-designed templates. Templates are pre-formatted documents that save you time — they already have styles, layouts, and sometimes content ready to customize.

Think of it like this:

A template is like a pizza with the base already prepared — you just add your toppings. A blank document is like starting from scratch with just flour.

Editing Techniques for Text & Numbers

Once you're in a document, you need to manipulate content. Here are the core techniques you need to master:

  • Highlight: Click and drag with the mouse to select the text or numbers you want to change. Once selected, it appears highlighted in a contrasting color.
  • Delete: Select text, then press Delete or Backspace to remove it permanently from that location.
  • Move: Select text, cut it (Ctrl+X), then click where you want it and paste (Ctrl+V).
  • Cut, Copy, and Paste:
    • Cut (Ctrl+X): Removes the selection and stores it in the clipboard.
    • Copy (Ctrl+C): Creates a duplicate in the clipboard without removing the original.
    • Paste (Ctrl+V): Inserts the clipboard content at your cursor position.
  • Drag and Drop: Select material, hold the mouse button down, drag it to a new location, and release. Faster than cut/paste but only works within the same view.
Golden Rule:

Always highlight first, then act. This prevents accidental deletion and makes sure your command applies only to what you intend.

Placing Objects Into Documents

A document isn't just text. You can insert many types of objects to make it richer and clearer:

  • Text and numbers (the basics)
  • Images and screenshots
  • Shapes and diagrams
  • Tables and charts
  • Graphs
  • Spreadsheet extracts
  • Database extracts
