1. What are Mainframes and Supercomputers?

What is a Mainframe Computer?

Mainframe Computer (Mainframe): A large, powerful computer used mainly by large organisations for bulk data-processing applications. Mainframes are used by banks, insurance companies, government departments, and other large organizations to process millions of transactions daily.

History: The name "mainframe" comes from the early days of computing when the CPU was housed in a steel cabinet called the "main frame." Although most people thought mainframes would become obsolete with the rise of PCs, they have continued to evolve and remain essential for large organizations.

Cost: A mainframe costs at least $75,000 (2020 prices). This is far more expensive than PCs or laptops, so only large organizations can afford them.

What is a Supercomputer?

Supercomputer: An extremely powerful computer designed for maximum processing power and speed. Supercomputers have hundreds of thousands of processor cores and can perform millions of calculations per second. They are used for scientific research, weather forecasting, and other data-intensive tasks.

Example: The Summit supercomputer (USA) costs $200 million to build and can perform calculations so fast that if every person on Earth (8 billion people) each did one calculation per second, it would take the world 305 days to complete what Summit does in just 1 second!

Size: The Cray XC40 supercomputer (which can have up to 172,000 processor cores) fills a room the size of two tennis courts.

Processor Cores and Parallel Processing

Processor Core: An individual processing unit within a CPU. Modern computers have multiple cores, allowing them to process multiple tasks simultaneously.
Serial vs Parallel Processing:
  • Serial Processing: Computer performs tasks one at a time (old PCs with single processor)
  • Parallel Processing: Computer performs multiple tasks at the same time using multiple cores

Examples of cores:

  • Typical PC: 4-8 cores (performs 4-8 tasks simultaneously)
  • Best performing PCs: up to 18 cores
  • Mainframes: hundreds of processor cores (e.g., IBM z15 has up to 190 cores)
  • Supercomputers: hundreds of thousands of cores (e.g., 172,000 cores in Cray XC40)
