Training

The Big Idea: A business is only as good as its people — and training is how a business turns "new hires who don't know what they're doing" into "confident staff who make the business money." Skip training, and you pay for it later in mistakes, unhappy customers, and staff who quit.

Summary — Everything In This Chapter
  • Training teaches new skills; development improves existing ones.
  • Well-trained staff are more productive, more valued/satisfied, and more loyal — reducing staff turnover.
  • Some training is a legal requirement (food safety, first aid, hazardous chemicals).
  • Induction training is given to new employees to introduce them to the business — its culture, policies, and their role.
  • On-the-job training happens while working, learning from colleagues in real time.
  • Off-the-job training happens away from the workplace, e.g. courses, seminars, workshops.
  • Both on-the-job and off-the-job training have clear advantages and disadvantages — you need to know both sides to evaluate in exam answers.
1. Why Training Is Important

Let's start with the basics. Businesses need to train both new and existing staff — but for slightly different reasons:

Training

The teaching of new skills — think of a brand-new employee learning how to use the till, or an existing employee learning a completely new piece of software.

Development

The improvement of skills an employee already has — like a chef who already knows how to cook getting coaching to refine their plating technique.

Think of it this way: training is filling a gap that wasn't there before, while development is polishing something that already exists. Both matter, and IGCSE exam questions love testing whether you can tell them apart.

The Importance of Well-Trained Employees

A well-trained workforce benefits a business in three connected ways:

Benefit Why it happens
Productive staff Employees work enthusiastically at what they're good at. E.g. staff trained in managing quality are more likely to spot ways to improve product standards.
Valued staff Trained employees feel satisfied, recognising their employer is spending money and time investing in them. This also makes the job more attractive to future applicants.
Loyal & flexible staff Labour retention increases because employees feel they're improving and want to keep developing. Skilled, confident staff can also take on new challenges.
The X → Y → Z Exam Structure

When explaining a benefit of training, don't just state it — develop it.

X (the training action) leads to Y (the immediate effect) which results in Z (the outcome for the business).

Example: "Training staff in customer service (X) means employees handle complaints more confidently (Y), which leads to higher customer satisfaction and repeat purchases (Z)."

Legal Requirements for Training

Some training isn't optional — it's the law. Common examples include:

  • Food safety regulations — workers must be trained in safe handling of ingredients.
  • First-aid training — businesses must ensure some workers are first-aid trained.
  • Hazardous chemicals — employees working with them must receive appropriate training.
