Quick SummarySkim this first, then dive into the detail below
  • The 4 Ps — Product, Price, Place, Promotion — work together (not alone) to satisfy the target market and hit business objectives.
  • Product — includes goods vs services, new product development (5 stages), and the importance of packaging.
  • Product Life Cycle — 5 stages (Development → Introduction → Growth → Maturity → Decline), each needing a different marketing strategy, plus extension strategies to fight decline.
  • Portfolio Analysis (Boston Matrix) — classifies products as Stars, Cash Cows, Question Marks, or Dogs based on market share and market growth.
  • Price — the only P that directly earns revenue. Influenced by USPs, technology, competition, brand strength, life cycle stage, and costs.
  • Pricing Strategies — Cost-plus, Skimming, Penetration, Competition-based, and Promotional pricing — each with trade-offs.
  • Place — the distribution channel (2-stage vs 3-stage) that gets a product from producer to consumer.
  • Retailing & E-tailing — types of retailer (multiples, department stores, supermarkets, hypermarkets, independents, markets) and the pros/cons of selling online.
  • Promotion — Above-the-line (mass media advertising) vs Below-the-line (direct marketing, sales promotions, personal selling, merchandising, exhibitions).
  • Public Relations — building a positive image via sponsorship, media relations, community outreach, publicity stunts, and public events.
  • Technology in Promotion — targeted online ads, viral marketing, social media, and e-newsletters.
  • Branding — adds value, allows premium pricing, builds recognition/loyalty, and differentiates the business — while boosting the balance sheet as an intangible asset.
1. What Is the Marketing Mix?

Think of the marketing mix like a recipe with four essential ingredients. Miss one out, or get the balance wrong, and the whole dish fails — no matter how good the other three ingredients are. A brilliant product sold at the wrong price, in the wrong place, with no promotion, will still flop.

The four Ps are: Product (what you're selling), Price (what you charge), Place (where/how customers get it), and Promotion (how you tell people about it). Businesses don't set these separately — they combine them in a way that fits their target market and their objectives.

PROMOTION PRODUCT \ / \ / MARKETING MIX (core) / \ / \ PLACE PRICE
Key Idea A business may use more than one version of a P across its range — e.g. a supermarket uses premium pricing on some products and loss-leader pricing on others, all under one roof.

Goods vs Services

Goods are tangible — you can touch, handle, and store them. They split into:

  • Durable goods — used repeatedly without wearing out (phones, cars, beds)
  • Non-durable goods — consumed soon after purchase (chocolate, milk, deodorant)
  • Producer goods — used by businesses to make other goods (tools, office equipment)

Services are intangible — you can't touch, see, or store them. They split into personal services (tutoring, hairdressing) and commercial services (cleaning, recruitment). Sometimes goods are sold with accompanying services — e.g. a TV sold with a warranty.

Q: Why might a low price on a luxury-branded handbag actually hurt sales rather than help them?
