Features of Digital Devices

Every digital device — desktop, laptop, or smartphone — can be judged on the same nine features, and it talks to you through one of four types of user interface.

1. The Nine Features of a Digital Device

Whenever an exam question asks you to compare two digital devices (say, a smartphone vs a desktop), examiners expect you to talk about the same checklist of features every time. Think of it like comparing two cars — you wouldn't just say "this one's nicer," you'd compare fuel economy, boot space, engine size, safety features, and so on. Digital devices have their own version of that checklist.

Here's an analogy that makes it click: imagine each device as a person you're hiring for a job. You'd want to know — can they travel easily (portability)? How fast do they work (performance)? How much can they remember (storage)? How do you give them instructions (user interface)? Can they talk to other people/systems (connectivity)? What skills do they have (media support)? How much do they "cost" to run (energy consumption)? Can they learn new skills later (expansion capability)? And can you trust them with sensitive information (security features)?

Portability

How easy the device is to carry around. Smaller & lighter = more portable. A smartphone fits in a pocket; a desktop tower does not.

Performance

How fast the device can process tasks — driven by processing power (CPU speed) and memory (RAM). More RAM = more programs run smoothly at once.

Storage

How much data (files, apps, photos) the device can hold permanently, even when switched off.

User Interface

How the user gives commands to and receives information from the operating system. See Topic 2 below.

Connectivity

How the device connects to other devices or networks — e.g. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB, HDMI, mobile data.

Media Support

Which media formats (video, audio, image types) the device can play or open natively.

Energy Consumption

How much power the device uses. Smaller/mobile devices are usually built to consume less energy so the battery lasts longer.

Expansion Capability

Whether extra storage, memory, or hardware/features can be added later — e.g. adding a second hard drive to a desktop.

Security Features

What protections exist for the device and the user's data — e.g. fingerprint scanners, passwords, encryption, face ID.
