Types & Uses of Online Communities

Big Idea: Every online community exists to let people with a shared interest connect, and it does this through a specific function (what it's for) built out of specific features (the tools that make it work) — and once you can spot the function and features of ANY platform, you can answer almost any exam question on this topic.

Every online community has a function (its purpose) and features (the tools that deliver that purpose).
Social networking — connects people through shared interests/relationships. Split into personal (Facebook, X) and professional (LinkedIn).
Online gaming — lets users play multiplayer games together (Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, Steam).
Online work spaces — let remote teams collaborate for work (Slack, SharePoint, Adobe Connect).
Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) — give teachers and students a shared platform for learning and assessment (Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, Moodle).
User-generated reference sites — wikis (collaborative editing) and forums (structured discussion), built and maintained by the users themselves.
User-generated content — video/photo sharing sites and blogs/vlogs, where users create and share their own content.
Social bookmarking — lets users categorise and share web documents and URLs (Pinterest, Reddit).
Across ALL of these, the same types of features keep reappearing: profiles, tags, ratings/reactions, comments, notifications, third-party integration, moderation. Recognising these patterns is the real exam skill.

1. What Is an Online Community?

An online community is simply a group of people who share a common interest and who communicate over the internet rather than face-to-face. Think of it like any real-world club or group — a football team, a book club, a workplace — except everything happens through a screen instead of a physical room.

The exam wants you to understand that every single online community you'll ever be asked about can be broken into two things:

The Golden Rule Function = WHY the community exists — the job it does for the people using it.
Features = HOW it does that job — the actual tools/buttons/systems built into the platform.

Analogy: think of a car. Its function is "to get you from A to B." Its features are the engine, the steering wheel, the brakes — the actual components that make that function possible. Whenever an exam question asks "describe the function of X" they want the purpose. When it asks "describe a feature of X," they want a specific tool and what it does.

What & Why

Social networking is the practice of forming groups in society — something humans have always done. The internet just made it possible to do this online, without needing to be in the same physical place.

Function of Social Networking To allow users to connect through shared interests or relationships.

Historically these split into two camps:

Personal communities — e.g. Facebook, Twitter/X (friends, family, hobbies)
Professional communities
