Types of Services

🎯 Big Idea: Different websites exist to do different jobs for people — shopping, booking, banking, learning, gaming, news, auctions, and entertainment — and each type has its own set of features built specifically to make that job easy, fast, and safe.

Internet banking — lets you manage your bank account online instead of visiting a branch.

Gaming sites — host games on a remote server, with features to enhance gameplay and build community.
News & auction sites — news sites deliver breaking stories with notifications; auction sites let people bid on items until a deadline.
Entertainment providers — give access to digital media via on-demand, streaming, or offline downloads (e.g. Netflix, Spotify).

🛒 1. Shopping Sites

A shopping site is basically a digital shop. Instead of walking around aisles, you scroll through a product catalogue, pick things, and pay — all online. Think of it as replacing four physical steps (browse → pick up → queue → pay) with four digital ones.

The Four Core Features

Feature	What It Does
Product catalogue	Displays items, usually grouped into categories, and often makes personalised recommendations based on what you've browsed.
Basket	Holds multiple items you've chosen so you can pay for everything together in one transaction, instead of paying item by item.
Checkout	Where you finalise the purchase — edit delivery details, apply voucher codes, and choose to sign in or check out as a guest.
Secure payment	Uses a secure method (often handled by a third-party payment processor like PayPal or Stripe) to protect your card details during the transaction.

Think of it like this Catalogue = the shelves. Basket = your trolley. Checkout = the till. Secure payment = the card machine that stops anyone stealing your details mid-transaction.

⚠️ Common Mistake Students often say "shopping online is cheaper" as an advantage — but this isn't guaranteed and examiners want you to focus on the *service features* (convenience, choice, availability) rather than assumptions about price.
