Edexcel International A Level Maths (YMA01): Units, Pathways and Where the Marks Actually Are
Edexcel's International A Level in Mathematics is modular, and almost everything that makes it easier or harder than a linear A Level follows from that one word. Six separate 90-minute exams. Three sittings a year. Resit any unit as often as you like, and the best result counts. Students who understand that structure treat the qualification as a series of small, repairable bets; students who don't sit six papers in one June and hope.
- IAL Maths (YMA01) = six units. P1, P2, P3 and P4 are compulsory, plus one applied pair: M1+S1, M1+D1, M1+M2, S1+D1 or S1+S2.
- Every unit is the same size: 1 hour 30 minutes, 75 marks, externally assessed, calculator allowed. Each is worth 16⅔% of the full IAL.
- IAS Maths (XMA01) = three units: P1, P2 and one of M1, S1 or D1 — each worth 33⅓%.
- You can resit any unit, as many times as you like, and the best available unit result counts towards the final grade. This is the single most valuable rule in the qualification.
- P1–P4, M1, M2, S1 and S2 run in January, June and October. FP1, FP2, FP3, M3 and S3 run in January and June only — a trap if you were planning an October rescue.
- Once a unit result is used to cash in one qualification it cannot be re-used for another — Maths plus Further Maths needs 12 different units.
What the six units are, and how they fit together
The Pure units are the spine. Everything else is a choice your school usually makes in Year 12 and rarely revisits.

The rule that decides your grade: best result counts
The specification is blunt about it: students can resit any unit whether or not the qualification is being cashed in, and if a unit is resat more than once, the best available unit result counts towards the final grade. A bad morning in P2 is not a bad grade. It is a unit to re-enter.
That changes the arithmetic of the whole two years. Because units are equally weighted at 16⅔% each, you can work out on results day exactly which single unit buys the most grade for the least revision — you have unit-level marks, not just an overall letter. Three sittings a year means there is usually a realistic window to do it in. One number there is not like the others. Correlation and regression is 304 questions — roughly a fifth of the entire S1 bank, and more than double the next topic in the same unit. If you take S1 and you are shaky on product-moment correlation coefficients, regression lines and interpreting them in context, that is not a gap; it is a grade. S1 and P1 are also the two most-enrolled units on the platform, so this is the topic the largest number of our students are walking towards.

A revision method that suits a modular qualification
Linear-A-Level advice does not transfer well here, because you are never revising "maths" — you are revising one 75-mark unit with a known topic list and about 30 past papers behind it.
- Work one unit at a time, and finish itSix units interleaved is how students end up mediocre at all six. Pick the unit you sit next, clear it, move on. The units barely overlap — P4 vectors has nothing to do with S1 regression.
- Start with topic-filtered questions, not papersDo 15 questions on implicit differentiation alone and you will know within twenty minutes whether you can do implicit differentiation. Do a whole P4 paper and you will know you got 61% and feel vaguely bad. Diagnosis first, then repair, then whole papers.
- Read the mark scheme like a specificationEdexcel maths mark schemes hand out method marks for structure — the correct approach with an arithmetic slip is worth far more than most students assume, and knowing which lines earn M marks changes how you write. - Put the formulae you are not given into flashcardsYou get a formula booklet, but it is not complete, and hunting through it costs minutes you do not have. - Only then sit whole papers, timed90 minutes for 75 marks is a shade over a minute a mark, with no reading time. Papers are where you find pacing problems; they are a poor place to find knowledge gaps. Use the past papers method and keep the last three clean for the final fortnight.
If you're taking Further Maths as well
One rule catches people out at cash-in. Once a unit result has been used to claim a qualification, it cannot be re-used for another one — a student certificating both IAL Mathematics and IAL Further Mathematics must have results from twelve different units. You cannot count S1 towards both. Plan the applied units for the two qualifications together, at the start, rather than discovering the clash when the certificates are claimed.
Further Maths needs FP1 plus either FP2 or FP3, then four more from the applied and further-pure pool. Remember the availability trap above: the Further Pure units do not run in October.
Is the IAL the same as a UK A Level?
Not identical, and it is worth being precise rather than reassuring. International A Levels are designed for international centres and are not accredited or regulated by any UK regulatory body — the specification says so in its own opening pages. What matters in practice is recognition, and IALs are widely accepted by universities in the UK and internationally; the grading scale is A*–E, the units are externally examined, and the assessment is in English only. The differences students actually feel are structural: modular rather than linear, three exam series a year rather than one, and resits with best-result-counts.
