The 2026–27 School Year in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, Mapped Against Every Exam Date
Two things get decided by a calendar rather than by ability. The first is whether a student enters the right exam series. The second is whether the family books a holiday on top of it.
The UAE has published its academic calendar three years ahead. Saudi Arabia has published 1448. Cambridge and Pearson have published their series windows and entry deadlines. Nobody has put them on the same page — so here it is: the 2026–27 school year in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, laid against every exam date that matters, with the four collisions worth knowing about before term starts.
- UAE: term starts 31 August 2026, ends 2 July 2027. Mid-term 12–18 Oct, winter 14 Dec–3 Jan, spring 5–11 Apr.
- Saudi Arabia: public schools run 23 August 2026 to 24 June 2027. International schools set their own three-term calendars.
- Collision 1: the Cambridge Nov entry deadline of 16 August falls in the summer holiday — before UAE term starts and before IGCSE results.
- Collision 2: the UAE October mid-term break (12–18 Oct) lands inside the Cambridge Oct/Nov exam window.
- Collision 3: November results arrive on 7 and 14 January 2027 — days after schools return.
- Collision 4: Ramadan is expected around 7 February to 8 March 2027, across mock season, with shortened school hours.
The whole year, on one line
The UAE calendar, exactly
The Ministry of Education published the academic calendar for three years at once — 2026–27, 2027–28 and 2028–29 — which is unusually helpful for families planning around exam series. For 2026–27:
The Saudi calendar, exactly
Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Education year for 1448 AH runs 23 August 2026 to 24 June 2027, structured across roughly 180 school days. International schools in Riyadh, Jeddah and the Eastern Province are not bound to it — most British and IB schools run a three-term year with their own half-terms, adjusted around Saudi public holidays.
A typical international-school pattern published for 2026–27 looks like the table below. Treat it as the shape of the year rather than as your school's dates, because it comes from school-calendar aggregators rather than from a single authority, and individual schools differ by days.
| Period | Typical dates | What it's good for |
|---|---|---|
| Term 1 | 26 Aug – 10 Dec 2026 | The long build. Everything that gets learned properly gets learned here. |
| October half term | 25–29 Oct 2026 | Sits inside the Oct/Nov exam window — see below |
| Winter break | 13–31 Dec 2026 | The last low-pressure block before mocks |
| Term 2 | 3 Jan – 4 Mar 2027 | Mock season, and November results land in week one |
| Eid al-Fitr break | Around 7–11 Mar 2027 | Eid al-Fitr expected 10–12 March |
| Spring break | 28 Mar – 8 Apr 2027 | The last clean revision block before the summer series |
| Term 3 | 11 Apr – 1 Jul 2027 | Exams. Not preparation — exams. |
Ramadan is expected to run from around 7 February to 8 March 2027, with Eid al-Adha expected around 16–18 May 2027. Schools across the Gulf typically shorten hours during Ramadan. That is not a reason to write the month off — but it is a reason not to schedule your heaviest revision push into it.
The four collisions
1. The November entry deadline falls in the summer holiday
This is the expensive one. Cambridge's standard final entry deadline for the October/November 2026 series is 16 August 2026. Schools in the UAE do not return until 31 August. Saudi public schools return on 23 August. And Cambridge IGCSE results are released on 18 August.
Read those four dates together and the trap is obvious: the standard entry deadline passes before you know your results. There is a separate later deadline of 21 September, but it applies to late entries carrying a late fee, and — separately, on the same date — to candidates retaking a June 2026 subject. It is not a general extension, and treating it as one is how families lose a November series. Pearson's deadline for Edexcel International GCSE November entries is 12 September.
2. The October break lands inside the exam window
The Cambridge October/November 2026 series runs 28 September to 13 November 2026 (12 November in Zone 2). The Edexcel International GCSE November window runs 27 October to 19 November 2026.
The UAE's mid-term break is 12–18 October. Saudi international schools commonly take theirs around 25–29 October. Both fall squarely inside those exam windows.
For a student sitting November papers this is a genuine gift — a full week with no lessons, in the middle of the series, exactly when a targeted push on the next paper pays most. For a family that booked flights in June, it is a disaster discovered in October. Check the two calendars against each other now, not at half-term.
3. November results arrive in the first week back
Cambridge November results are released on 7 January 2027 for AS and A Level and 14 January 2027 for IGCSE and O Level. Edexcel International GCSE results follow on 20 January for centres and 21 January for students. UAE schools return on 4 January; Saudi international schools typically around 3 January.
So results land in the first or second week of term, in the middle of mock preparation, with the enquiry-about-results window opening immediately after. Cambridge's EAR deadline for the November series is 26 February 2027. Diarise it in December, because the fortnight it lands in is the busiest of the year. Our January 2027 results guide has the full timing.
4. Ramadan sits across mock season
Ramadan is expected around 7 February to 8 March 2027, with shortened school hours across the region — and it falls straight through the traditional mock-exam and revision-intensification period.
The planning consequence is simple and worth acting on in September: January and early February are the last full-intensity revision weeks before the summer series. Not April. Families who assume they will "really start after the spring break" are, in a Ramadan-in-February year, starting far later than they think. Build the heavy content work into Term 2's first six weeks, and use Ramadan for lighter, higher-frequency retrieval — short sessions, spaced, rather than three-hour blocks. That happens to be the more effective pattern anyway; we set out why in how spaced repetition schedules revision.

What to do with this in the first week of term
- Put both calendars in one placeYour school's published calendar and the exam windows above. Most families discover a clash by accident; ten minutes now removes that.
- Settle the November question before 16 AugustThe standard deadline arrives before results. If a resit is plausible, speak to the exams officer now. The November resit study plan covers what the seven weeks between entry and exam should actually contain.
- Protect the October break if there are November papersA free week inside an exam series is worth more than the same week in July. Do not book over it.
- Front-load Term 2With Ramadan expected across February, the heavy content work belongs in January and early February. Plan Term 2 backwards from that, not forwards from the spring break.
- Make the weekly habit small enough to survive Ramadan and half-termsA plan that only works in normal weeks is a plan that stops four times a year. Short, spaced, marked practice survives shortened school hours, travel and exam weeks — which is precisely why it beats long sessions across a full academic year.
