November 2026 IGCSE in the UAE: Resits After the Portfolio Grades

This year is not a normal year for UAE students. Cambridge cancelled the June 2026 exam series across the UAE — along with Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar — and awarded grades through a portfolio of evidence instead. Rather than sitting papers, candidates submitted work that Cambridge marked and graded externally.

Which leaves a lot of students facing an unusual question: your grade arrives in August without you having sat an exam, and you have to decide whether to sit one in November after all. This guide covers the November 2026 series in the UAE — deadlines, which subjects are actually available, and the timing trap that catches people out.

What happened in June 2026

Cambridge confirmed that because of the situation in parts of the Middle East, exams could not proceed as planned in the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar. Affected qualifications were Cambridge IGCSE, Cambridge O Level, Cambridge International AS & A Level and the Cambridge IPQ.

Grades were awarded via a portfolio of evidence — broadly, three substantial pieces of work per subject, submitted by schools and marked externally by Cambridge rather than assessed by teachers.

Can portfolio candidates resit in November?

The honest answer: ask your centre. In a normal year, resitting in the next available series is routine, and November is that series. But we could not find an official statement confirming how November 2026 will operate in the UAE specifically, or confirming resit arrangements for candidates who received portfolio grades.

Given that, do not plan around an assumption. Contact your school's exams officer or the British Council directly, and do it before the August deadline rather than after it.

Not every subject runs in November

This is the detail that derails people. The November series is not a full mirror of June.

For Cambridge, the subjects dropped in November are mostly minority and community languages, plus Latin, Sanskrit, Pakistan Studies and English as an Additional Language. Every mainstream subject runs — Maths, the sciences, English, Economics, Business, ICT.

The other series — and two myths

• Edexcel International GCSE has no January series
  Discontinued after January 2023 and replaced by the November series. If you've been told to aim for "January IGCSE," that option no longer exists.
• But Edexcel International A Level does
  The January 2027 IAL series runs roughly 8–25 January 2027, with entries closing around mid-October 2026. This is A Level only — which is where the confusion comes from.
• Cambridge's March series is not available in the UAE
  The February/March series runs in India and Romania only. It is not an option for UAE candidates, whatever you may read elsewhere.

Sitting as a private candidate in the UAE

If you've left school, are homeschooled, or your school won't enter you for a resit, you can register as a private candidate. The British Council in the UAE accepts private candidates for Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel and Oxford International AQA, with separate registration streams for Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

1. Contact the British Council early
   Private-candidate registration has its own guide and its own cutoffs, typically earlier than the board's published deadline.
2. Check the subject actually runs in November
   Using the tables above. Do this before you pay for anything.
3. Ask about fees directly
   Fees are not published publicly — they sit on the registration system. Ask the British Council for the current price list rather than trusting a figure you found online.
4. Watch for your Statement of Entry
   It arrives roughly three weeks before your exams and confirms your venue. Venues are not published in advance, so this is how you find out where you're sitting.

Eight weeks is enough — if you use them properly

From late July to 28 September is about eight weeks. That is genuinely enough time to move a grade, but only with a specific plan: past papers under timed conditions, marked against the real scheme, targeting the topics you actually lost marks on rather than revising everything evenly.

If you sat a portfolio rather than an exam this June, add one more priority — exam technique under time pressure. It's the thing portfolio assessment couldn't test, and the thing a written paper tests hardest.
