How to Sit IGCSE as a Private Candidate in the UAE
Every guide to sitting IGCSE privately in the UAE prints a deadline. Almost all of them print the wrong one.
The date circulating for the October/November 2026 series — 16 August for standard entries, 21 September for late entries — is Cambridge’s deadline. Cambridge’s deadline is the date by which a centre must submit entries to Cambridge. You are not a centre. You are a candidate registering through a centre, and the centre closes its own doors first, because it needs time to collate everyone before it files.
There are three deadlines in a private-candidate registration, and the only one you can actually miss is the earliest. This guide is about that stack, and about the four other things that catch UAE private candidates every series: the No Objection Certificate, the subjects you are not allowed to take, the access-arrangements lead time, and the practical papers.
- The British Council is the exam centre for private candidates in the UAE, with separate streams in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, running Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel and Oxford International AQA.
- Register with the centre’s window, not the board’s. The British Council sets its own, earlier windows and publishes them in a candidate information flyer per series.
- For reference, Cambridge’s own October/November 2026 dates were 16 August 2026 standard — now closed — and 21 September 2026 late, which is the remaining route; Pearson’s International GCSE November deadline is 12 September 2026 and is still open.
- If your child is currently enrolled at a school, you need a No Objection Certificate from that school before the centre will accept the entry.
- Not every syllabus is open to private candidates. Options built on coursework or a live speaking test generally are not.
- Sciences are taken with the alternative-to-practical written paper rather than a lab exam.
- Access arrangements need roughly six weeks’ notice — longer than most families expect, and it is a hard constraint.
- Typical UAE private-candidate fees are reported at AED 700–1,300 per subject. The British Council does not publish a public price list; request the current one.
Who is a private candidate?
A private candidate is anyone entered for an exam other than as a student of the centre delivering it. In the UAE that turns out to be a large and varied group:
- Students whose school does not offer a subject they want — commonly Further Maths, Computer Science, a home language, or a second science.
- Resit candidates whose school will not open a November entry for one or two subjects. The decision itself is worked through in the resits and retakes guide.
- Families mid-relocation, between schools, or between systems.
- Home-educated students — see IGCSE without school.
- Adults completing qualifications they need for a university application or a professional licence.

The three deadlines, in the order they bite
How much earlier does a centre close? Enough to matter. In Bangladesh, for a comparable series, the British Council’s regular window shut on 5 August with a late window ending 26 August — against a Cambridge late deadline of 21 September. A candidate reading Cambridge’s page would have believed they had four more weeks than they had.
The No Objection Certificate, and why it exists
If the candidate is currently enrolled at a school, the centre will ask for a No Objection Certificate from that school before accepting a private entry. This surprises families, and occasionally annoys them, but the reason is mechanical: a student cannot be entered twice for the same syllabus in the same series, and the centre has no way to see a school’s entry list. The NOC is the school confirming it is not entering the candidate.
Two practical consequences. First, ask early — a certificate that takes a week to issue is a week off your registration window, and school administration in the UAE slows sharply across the summer break. Second, if the school refuses, that is a conversation to have before the window opens, not after it closes.
What you need to register
- Decide the board and the exact syllabus codeNot “Physics” but 0625 or 4PH1, and not just the code but the option — Core or Extended, and which practical route. The board differences that matter are in Cambridge vs Edexcel. Getting this wrong is the one error that cannot be fixed after entries close.
- Confirm the syllabus is open to private candidatesSome syllabuses and options are restricted, chiefly those assessed by coursework or a live speaking test. The centre’s syllabus-and-options list for the series is the authority on this.
- Register and pay online, then send documentsA valid Emirates ID or passport copy; the No Objection Certificate if currently at a school; and your previous statement of results if you are retaking.
- Request access arrangements at least six weeks aheadExtra time, a reader, a separate room, modified papers. Evidence is required and the lead time is genuine — it is not a formality that can be rushed at the end.
- Collect the Statement of Entry and check every lineIt arrives roughly three weeks before the exams and confirms your venue, candidate number, syllabuses and components. Errors on it are fixable; errors discovered on exam morning are not.

The subjects you cannot take privately
This is the restriction that most often derails a plan late. A private candidate has no school to run internally-assessed work, so options assessed by coursework are generally closed, as are components requiring a live speaking test with an examiner conducted at the school.

Exam day, results, and what happens next
Your venue is whatever the Statement of Entry says, which for UAE candidates is typically a British Council exam venue in Dubai or Abu Dhabi rather than a school. Bring the Statement of Entry and the ID you registered with.
Results for Cambridge IGCSE and O Level in the October/November 2026 series publish on 14 January 2027; Pearson Edexcel International GCSE follows on 20–21 January. If the grade is not what you needed, the two options are a review of results or a resit, and they are not interchangeable. The trade-off is in keep, remark or retake and the mechanics in how to request a remark.
The actual hard part: preparing without a teacher
Registration is administration. It takes an afternoon. The part that decides the grade is the eight to twelve weeks before the exam, spent without a teacher setting the pace, without a class to compare yourself against, and without anyone marking your work honestly.
Private candidates fail for one of two reasons, and neither is intelligence. Either they revise by reading — which feels productive and produces almost nothing — or they do past papers and mark themselves generously, which produces confidence and no marks. The fix is the same in both cases: work from real papers, mark to the real scheme, and let the pattern of lost marks pick the next topic rather than picking it yourself.
