Arabic 3180: Translation Skills

Master the art of accurate translation: Arabic→English and English→Arabic with confidence, strategy, and precision

Quick Overview

📋 What You'll Learn

Translation strategies, common pitfalls, vocabulary equivalents, grammar considerations, idioms, and techniques for both language directions

🎯 The Big Picture

Translation is 30 out of 55 marks in Paper 2 (55% of that section). Accurate translation directly impacts your overall grade

⏱️ Exam Format

30 minutes total. Two passages: Arabic→English (10 min), English→Arabic (20 min)

✅ Your Goal

Convey meaning accurately while maintaining natural language flow in the target language

1. Understanding Translation: What Examiners Want

The Core Principle

Translation is NOT word-for-word conversion. It's meaning-for-meaning transfer between languages while maintaining natural flow in the target language.

Translation ≠ Word Lookup

❌ Wrong approach: Look up every word in a dictionary and put English/Arabic words in the same order.

✅ Right approach: Understand the meaning, then express it naturally in the target language.

Example:
Arabic: "لا يزال الطالب يدرس" → Direct: "Not yet is the student studying"
Correct: "The student is still studying" (captures the meaning of "لا يزال")

Paper 2 Section A: The Breakdown

Direction Passage Length Marks Time Alloc. Key Challenge
Arabic → English 150-200 words 10 10 min Understanding nuance, cultural context
English → Arabic 150-200 words 20 20 min Expressing English concepts in correct Arabic
⚠️ Notice: English→Arabic is worth DOUBLE the marks. This is because Arabic grammar is more complex. Invest more time (20 min) and effort here.

Marking Criteria

Accuracy (المعنى الصحيح): ~60% of marks

✓ Is the meaning conveyed correctly?
✓ Are key details preserved?
✓ Is there no misinterpretation?
Minor word choice variations are OK if meaning is accurate.

Fluency (الطلاقة): ~40% of marks

✓ Does the translation read naturally in the target language?
✓ Is grammar correct?
✓ Is vocabulary appropriate?
A translation that sounds awkward (even if technically accurate) loses fluency marks.

2. The Translation Strategy: A Step-by-Step Approach

The 4-Step Process (Applies to Both Directions)

STEP 1: UNDERSTAND (2 minutes)

Read the entire passage first. Don't translate yet.

• What is the passage about? (topic)
• Who is speaking? (formal/informal?)
• What is the mood/tone? (serious, casual, informative?)
• Are there any difficult words? (circle them)

This prevents you from translating word-by-word and missing the big picture.

STEP 2: IDENTIFY CHALLENGES (1 minute)

Mark difficult sections:
