1. Understanding Question Types: What Examiners Ask

The Big Picture

Reading comprehension questions test four levels of understanding: literal (direct from text), inference (reading between lines), vocabulary (word meanings), and opinion (your thoughts).

Question Type 1: Literal Comprehension (مباشر)

What it tests: Can you find information directly stated in the passage?

Example questions:
• ما عنوان النص؟ (What is the title?)
• من يسكن في البيت؟ (Who lives in the house?)
• كم طالباً في الفصل؟ (How many students in the class?)

Answer strategy: Find the exact phrase in the passage. Copy it or rephrase it directly. No inference needed.

Question Type 2: Inference (استنتاج)

What it tests: Can you understand meaning that's NOT explicitly stated?

Example questions:
• لماذا ترك أحمد الدراسة؟ (Why did Ahmed quit school?) [answer is implied, not directly stated]
• كيف شعرت الأم عندما فقدت ابنها؟ (How did the mother feel when she lost her son?) [you deduce from context]
• هل كان الرجل سعيداً؟ (Was the man happy?) [judge from his actions/words]

Answer strategy: Look for clues in the text (tone, actions, consequences). Make a reasonable conclusion. Use Arabic to express your inference.

Question Type 3: Vocabulary in Context (معاني الكلمات)

What it tests: Do you understand word meanings from surrounding context?

Example questions:
• ما معنى كلمة "الكنز" في النص؟ (What does "treasure" mean in the text?)
• استخرج من النص كلمة تعني "شديد"؟ (Find a word from the text meaning "intense"?)

Answer strategy: Never give isolated definitions. Explain how the word is used IN THE PASSAGE. "الكنز معناه الشيء الثمين والمجهول"

Question Type 4: Opinion/Evaluation (الرأي والحكم)

What it tests: Can you evaluate and form opinions based on the passage?

Example questions:
• هل تتفق مع رأي الكاتب؟ (Do you agree with the author's opinion?)
• هل كان الحل مناسباً؟ (Was the solution appropriate?)
• ما رأيك في تصرف البطل؟ (What's your opinion on the protagonist's actions?)

Answer strategy: Give a clear opinion (نعم/لا) THEN justify it with evidence from the passage. "نعم، أتفق مع الكاتب لأن..."
