Utility Software: A type of system software that helps maintain a computer system. Utilities assist users in controlling or maintaining the operation of a computer, its devices, and its software.

Why Utility Software is Needed

Without utility software, a computer would not function properly.

  • File Handling: Most computer work involves files. Utilities manage copying, moving, and organizing files
  • Storage Management: Hard disks become fragmented and full. Utilities optimize storage
  • System Maintenance: Hardware and software need regular maintenance to run efficiently
  • Performance: Utilities improve computer performance and speed
  • Security: Anti-virus and back-up utilities protect data

2. Hard Disk Structure

Components of a Hard Disk

Understanding hard disk structure is important because many utility functions (formatting, defragmentation, partitioning) work directly with this structure.

Hard Disk Structure (Simplified)

Main Components:

  • Platters: Individual disks that spin at high speed (several thousands of RPM). Each platter has two surfaces (top and bottom)
  • Read-Write Heads: Tiny arms that read data from or write data to the spinning platters. They float on a film of air—they never touch the disk surface
  • Spindle: Central axis that holds and spins the platters together at the same speed
  • Arm Assembly: Moves the read-write heads across the disk surfaces

Organization of Data:

  • Tracks: Concentric circular paths on each disk surface where data is stored
  • Sectors: Divisions of each track (typically 512 bytes per sector)
  • Cylinders: A track on the top platter + the corresponding tracks directly below it on all platters
  • Blocks: OS deals with data in blocks (1, 2, 4, 8+ sectors combined)
