Expert System Scenarios

Eight real-world domains where expert systems are used — for each one, understand the inputs, what the knowledge base holds, how the inference engine reasons, and what comes out.

🚗 Car Faults

The Big Idea: The same expert system structure — inference engine, knowledge base, user interface, explanation system — applies across every scenario. What changes is what goes into the knowledge base and who the user is. Understanding any one scenario deeply means you can apply the same logic to all of them.

How to study this section

For every scenario, the textbook uses the same components. The knowledge base editor and explanation system work the same way in every case — focus on what is specific to each domain: who the user is, what they enter, what the knowledge base stores, and what the output looks like. That's what the exam will ask you about.

Mineral Prospecting
Section 7.2.1 — Used by geologists to evaluate drilling sites

Expert systems help geologists evaluate whether specific sites are likely to contain a particular mineral or ore. The system produces probabilities of finding minerals at specific locations and provides explanations for its conclusions — not just a yes/no answer.

📥 Inputs (via UI)
  • Types of rocks at the site
  • Geological structure of the site
  • Minerals currently found at the site
🗃️ Knowledge Base Contains
  • Models of successful drilling sites and their associated minerals
  • IF–THEN rules based on geological patterns
📤 Output
  • Percentage probability of finding the mineral at the site
  • Explanation of the reasoning behind the conclusion

The inference engine compares the geologist's input data with the models in the knowledge base using IF–THEN rules. The system may ask the geologist further questions via the user interface to narrow down probabilities before producing the final output.

🔑 What makes this domain-specific: The knowledge base stores models of successful sites — the geologist enters new site data, and the inference engine finds the closest matching geological pattern.

Investment Analysis
Section 7.2.2 — Assists financial advisors at banks

Expert systems act as assistants to financial advisors at banks, helping them make recommendations to investors. The financial advisor still makes the final decision. The system must gather four critical pieces of information about the investor before it can reason:

  • The amount the client wishes to invest
  • The level of risk the investor is willing to accept
  • The desired rate of return on the investment
  • How long the investor is willing to commit the investment for
