Simulations

What a simulation is, the advantages and disadvantages, and four key applications: pilot training, learning to drive, natural disaster planning, and nuclear science research.

🌊 Natural Disasters
☢️ Nuclear Research
The Big Idea: A simulation imitates a real-world event using a computer — usually because the real event is too dangerous, too expensive, too rare, or physically impossible to replicate. A model represents how the system works; the simulation shows how the system behaves over time.
DefWhat is a Computer Simulation?
Definition

A computer simulation is when a computer is used to imitate an event as it happens in the real world. It is usually created from a mathematical model which represents the real system. Computer programs are written to include the main features of this real-world system.

Key distinction: The model is the representation of the system. The simulation is how the system performs over time.

Simulations are particularly valuable for environments that are difficult, dangerous, or impossible to replicate in real life — such as natural disaster planning, nuclear research, aircraft emergencies, and extreme driving conditions.

Adv/DisAdvantages and Disadvantages of Simulations
✅ Advantages
  • No cost for repairing or replacing damaged vehicles or aircraft during training
  • Fewer instructors may be needed — reducing staffing costs
  • Can measure results difficult to obtain in real life — e.g. precise reaction times
  • Allows you to see how a system works before designing or modifying it — fewer real-world mistakes
  • Prevents injury or death in the event of a crash — pilots and drivers stay safe
  • Rare events (extreme weather, disasters) can be recreated easily without waiting for them to occur
  • Multiple scenarios can be tested rapidly
❌ Disadvantages
  • Buying a simulator with fast processing and large memory is very expensive
  • Technical support can cost more than regular maintenance of actual vehicles or aircraft
  • Retraining instructors to use a simulator takes time and costs money
  • Unpredictable human behaviour means it is impossible to simulate every possible scenario
  • Inaccurate formulas/functions may mean the simulation doesn't accurately represent all real situations
  • May make trainees overconfident and too casual about their abilities in the real world
  • Sometimes insufficient data exists to build an accurate mathematical model
9.2.1Pilot Training
✈️
Flight Simulators
Used by airlines to train new pilots and qualify existing pilots on new aircraft

As air travel grows, more pilots are needed. As new aircraft are developed, existing pilots need requalification. Flight simulators allow this to happen cheaply and safely. A flight simulator is NOT a PC game — it is a purpose-built physical cabin that is an exact replica of a real aircraft cockpit.

Components of a flight simulator:

  • Aircraft cockpit with all real controls: joysticks, levers, switches, buttons, sliders, fuel gauges
  • Screens displaying computer-generated environments — airports and surrounding areas built from actual plans, maps, photographs, and site visits
